Deaths - We have learned of the death of Jean-Claude Deville, aged 77.

A graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique and the ENSAE in 1968, Jean-Claude Deville has devoted a large part of his career to statistical research. His pioneering contributions to statistics on functional data and factorial analysis, and his use of harmonic analysis to create the family calendar - reflecting his interest in demography - are of major importance. He is world-renowned for his research in survey theory, which has led to major advances in this field. His work on calibration, balancing and weight sharing has had a considerable international impact.

Jean-Claude was elected a member of theInternational Statistical Institute in 1979, then became involved in the activities of theInternational Association of Survey Statisticians, of which he was a Council member from 1993 to 1997. He was also behind the creation of the Journées de Méthodologie Statistique de l'Insee, organized since 1991. Head of the Survey Statistics Laboratory at ENSAI's Centre de recherche en économie et statistique from 1998 to 2010, he has supervised numerous theses. In 2018, he was awarded the renowned Waksberg Prize, which recognizes internationally recognized statisticians for their innovative work combining theory and practice in the field of survey methodology.

A brilliant statistician, a passionate speaker, a basketball and chess enthusiast, Jean-Claude was always an extremely inquisitive man, a good listener and highly cultured. Those who had the privilege of meeting and talking with him know what a sensitive and engaging character he was.
