Presentation of the book Empires et Colonies (Presses Universitaires Blaise Pascal, 2010)

Participants: Christine de Gemeaux, Jean-Paul Cahn and Ingof Diener.
Moderator: Joachim Umlauf

From the end of the 19thcentury to the beginning of the 20th, Germany briefly established a major colonial empire. The question of the relationship between the Empire and its colonies remained unanswered until the time of the Federal Republic. Was there convergence between the German Reich and other colonial empires, or was there a "specific German path" (Sonderweg) from the Holy German Empire onwards? The book answers this double question by looking back at the genealogy of the Empire in the international context.
The debate will focus in particular on the opposing theses of the "return of the repressed", following the massacres in South-West Africa, and that of German post-colonial mourning at the time of the Algerian War.
