Evening debate with Generali CEO Philippe Donnet

The European insurance market and the effects of digitalization.

ENSAE Alumni is pleased to invite you to its next
Economy and Finance debate evening

The European insurance market and the effects of digitalization.

With

Philippe Donnet (X80, Associate of the Institute of Actuaries). He has spent most of his career in the insurance industry, first with AXA, where he held positions in France, Italy and Japan, and then with Generali since 2013.

In March 2016, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Generali Group, and was reappointed in 2019 and 2022.

The current state of the insurance market

The biggest insurance groups are Chinese and focused on their domestic market, while American groups, which were very international in the early 2000s, refocused on the United States after the 2008 crisis. The multinational groups are therefore European.

There are two main types of insurance market:

  • Property and casualty insurance (home, auto, business, marine, aviation, etc.) and protection insurance (health, disability, death, etc.).
  • Life insurance/savings, which require strong financial management skills and considerable assets under management.

Challenges for leading insurers

  • Develop the professionalism of agents, an essential element in the "insurance-client-agent" triptych. The contribution of new technologies, notably artificial intelligence, makes it possible to simplify formalities (front and back office) and offer customers tailor-made formulas. For Philippe Donnet, "insurance is a business where emotion is a reality.insurance contracts are not 'commodities' like telephone contracts or bank accounts".

  • Take into account the increase in natural risks, which is currently unavoidable, and where the insurer-reinsurer duo is playing its part, but where the short-term consequence for customers is an increase in premiums. The insurer's role in preventing climate change is becoming increasingly decisive.

  • Significantly strengthen its ability to manage assets, taking into account the constraints of liabilities, particularly in times of low interest rates.
