What is a healthy financial market?

Since 2007, periods of instability have followed one another on most credit and equity markets, and have even spread to the heart of sovereign debt markets. The search for scapegoats, led by bankers, traders and sophisticated operators such as hedge funds, continues unabated. In particular, the development of financial mathematics, used extensively in the management of bank equity, credit and equity derivatives, has been strongly criticized as a vector for propagating and amplifying the crisis. But shouldn't we be looking for other causes of these repeated crises? Imprecise regulations, deteriorating statistical systems and the very organization of financial markets could be far more relevant explanations. From the CO2 market to the CDS market, how can we identify a healthy market from one that is structurally unstable? What are the opportunities and risks generated by such imperfections? How can regulation create its own sources of instability? Antoine Paille, (ENSAE 1977), founded Société Générale's options division in the mid-80s, which has now become the world leader in this activity. After creating Commerz Finanzial Products, Antoine Paille is now developing Pattern Recognition Global Trading. He will share with us over 30 years' experience of capital markets and a rare insight into the development processes of financial innovation, which offer a unique perspective on the current crisis.
